The Legacy of the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo

Discover the rich history behind the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo, a cherished tradition rooted in the heart of Vinita, Oklahoma. Born in 1879 on a ranch near the Verdigris River, Will Rogers spent formative years in the area, attending Willie Halsell College and forming lifelong friendships. In 1934, Rogers encouraged the Vinita community to host a rodeo, promising to return. Tragically, Will Rogers and Wiley Post passed away just days before the planned event in 1935. Since then, the rodeo has been held annually as a tribute to Vinita’s beloved "son," growing into one of the southwest's most outstanding rodeos.
